Richard served in the United States Air Force as an Airman A/1st Class during the Korean Conflict. On August 24, 1956, he married Shirley Ann Appleby. She preceded him in death in 1996. Mr. Broderson worked as boiler plant operator for the Rock Island Arsenal prior to his retirement in 1986. He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Iowa Hawkeyes, Fighting Illini, and Nascar fan. He enjoyed dancing, spending time with his family, and was a former member of the American Legion Post #26.

His son: Robert (Carol) Broderson of Mountain Home, Arizona and his brother: Donald (Pat) Broderson of Davenport, Iowa; His six grandchildren and his nine great-grandchildren.
