Born in the wake of the American Revolutionary War, the enterprising John Legg initially prospered as a blacksmith in Skaneateles, NY, before making his fortune as a carriage manufacturer. A local civic leader as well, he died at age 75 in 1857. PHe had been predeceased by his wife, the former Emma Colvin, three years earlier. His survivors included their daughter, Juliet, who was wife of his genial young financial advisor, Joel Thayer. Thayer would later become a wealthy banker.
