CHATFIELD, Wilbert E.
Wilbert E. Chatfield, 79, of Waterbury, passed away at home on Friday, (October 24, 2003). Born in Niantic on Dec. 11, 1923, he was the foster child of Pauline Wright of Waterbury. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Chatfield, two sons, William E. Chatfield and John Kevin Chatfield and a brother Morris Chatfield. He was the former spouse of Helen Gaffney Chatfield and friend and companion of .... Wilbert leaves a stepson, ... and a son, ..., both of Waterbury. He also leaves three daughters, ... he also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He retired from Ball & Socket Co. of Waterbury after 35 years of service. He was an army veteran serving in World War II. Wilbert was an accomplished artist and furniture upholsterer and enjoyed carpentry and bird watching. The funeral and burial will be private at the request of the family.
==========
Wilbert Chatfield married Helen Gaffney from Waterbury and had six kids. Helen also had a son out of wedlock prior to their marriage. As an infant, Wilbert was put into an orphanage, then raised by his foster family in Seymour.

Wilbert said we were of Native American, English (slight Scottish in us), and on my mom's side, Irish. Wilbert's sister Mary, married a Ken Scott, and lived in Cheshire, Connecticut most of their lives, both are deceased, as is his brother Morris and his wife Mary.

My dad only remembered seeing his father one time his whole life, and that was when he went into the Army and was shipping out. At the bottom of the boat's plank to board, he saw this man, and the man looked EXACTLY like himself, and he said he knew that it must have been his father, due to the same facial and body look.

Note: On census and military records, Wilbert is listed as white, not Indian, though as he was adopted at a young age, that may not have been known.
