The 1969 season was also his best, record-wise, as he was 14-3. He also pitched in the National League Championship Series for Pittsburgh in 1970, 1971, and 1972 and in the World Series in 1971. He was killed on his 29th birthday while driving to a party at a golf course near Martins Ferry, Ohio. The car he was driving in a light rain went left of center and collided head-on with another vehicle.
