He was the son of Nathaniel Sayre Harris, USMA Class of 1825 and Elizabeth Callender Andrews Harris, the daughter of John Andrews and Margaret Abercrombie Andrews.

On August 19, 1872 as Henry Leavenworth Harris, he married Emily Kent Poag.

They were the parents of three children including Emily Harris.

Emily Poag died on February 27, 1914 at Florence, Italy.
