Julius is the son of Christian Gottlieb Altman and Christene Fredricka Sofie Kolbe.

Julius Altman came with his brother Franz Altman from Prussia, Germany, arriving in the U.S.A. on 8 Sep 1854 when Julius was 27 years old. He settled in Wisconsin and applied for citizenship on 2 Apr 1855. He married Louise Froemke in 1863. This couple had a total of 13 children, 2 of which died in infancy.

The family moved to Dakota Territory in 1877 and homesteaded in Shenford Township. Julius Altman filed a Preemption Claim on Section 20 on 2 Aug 1880 and a homestead claim on Section 20 on 22 Oct 1880. This land was later owned by H. C. Buss for many years and later owned by Les and Ron Friese. The family's first home was dug into the Sheyenne River bank for the winter. In the spring of the year, a water spring started flowing inside of their dugout, forcing them to build a sod house which was also near the Sheyenne on the west edge of 51/2-20 Shenford. Later they built a log house further east. It was while living here that the last five of the 13 children were born.

After a few years the family moved to Casey Township (SE1A-23 Casey) about 3/4 mile from Casey school #2 where they lived until their deaths, Louise in 1904 at age 52; Julius in 1919 at age 92. Their son Lew kept the Altman place which he farmed until he retired and his sons took over the home place, first Allen and then younger son Earl.

He was naturalized a U.S. Citizen on 30 Aug 1886
