The family said that Manuel was the first railroad conductor on the first train that went through Bamberg.
He moved his family from the Bamberg SC area around 1916, to a farm in south Richmond County, Ga. They moved because "the water was bad, and people were dying". Manuel was a farmer. His granddaughter, Pauline Carter, said she always loved to go with him when he bought watermelons for the hogs. He would come back with half a truck load, scoop out the hearts of the melons with his knife for the grandchildren, then toss the rest to the hogs. She said they always ate so much those days, it made them sick.
