Stacy Benson belonged to the Town and Country Saddle Club, Fergus Falls, and won many awards for her riding.
She was born Oct. 13, 1970, at Elbow Lake, the daughter of Gary and Caroline (Hutchings) Stavig. She attended elementary school in Fergus Falls, moving to Willmar with her family in 1984. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1989. She continued her education at Ridgewater College and was currently taking business classes at Minnesota West.
On Sept. 10, 1994, she was united in marriage to Michael Benson at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. They made their home in Atwater. She managed the Lakeshirts Store in the Kandi Mall and was currently manager of the AmericInn in Litchfield, where she was honored as general manager of the year. She was active with the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce, having served on the Ambassadors as Promotion Committee Chairman and on the Board of Directors. She had also been working at Central Tire and Auto. During her school years she was active in 4-H and loved horses and dogs. She taught dog obedience classes in Willmar and Litchfield in addition to doing private training. With her love of horses, she enjoyed trail rides with her friends. She was baptized at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Barrett, and was confirmed at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar on Nov. 21, 1986. Her family recalls how she was a friend to horses and all animals, calling the authorities if she saw a dog she thought was being abused. She gained an appreciation and love for music from her older sisters and brothers, eventually finding her generation's music to listen to. She loved the outdoors, 4-wheeling and motor sports, knowing makes and characteristics of cars. She excelled in roller-skating and rollerblading. She is survived by her husband, Michael; her parents, Gary and Caroline Stavig, Willmar; siblings: Anthony Stavig, Plymouth, Sheila (Wayne) Hanson, Fergus Falls, Penny (Dan) Petersen, Fergus Falls, and Brian Stavig, Shakopee; her father and mother- in-law, Don and Eileen Hesse, St. Cloud; nephews: Alex Hanson, Joel (and Heather) Petersen and their children Tahren, Tresten and Gracyn; aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents. Visitation: Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
