Plaque hangs in Memorial Hall of Bancroft Hall at the US Naval Academy. LCDR Roper died while attempting to rescue a seaman on a gunboat in his command. As a graduate of the Naval Academy, he was honored by his classmates with this plaque. Subsequently, a destroyer was named for him, the USS Roper.
