Alfred Bales was born in Iowa. He was a resident of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, when he enlisted as a private on May 11, 1863. Although he was 16 years old, he gave his age as 19. He was mustered into Company K, 19th Iowa Infantry, on May 25, 1863. He later transferred to Company C, 29th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered out on August 10, 1865, at New Orleans, Louisiana. After the war he received veteran's pension no. 212.414. He was a widower living in Santa Monica when he was admitted to the Sawtelle Soldiers' Home on September 26, 1905. He was discharged at his own request on June 9, 1909, probably to live with his son, Fred Bales, of Los Angeles. Alfred was readmitted to the Sawtelle Home on April 3, 1922, where he remained until he died of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 27, 1923.
