Born March 17, 1918, near Cushing, Texas, to Rush and Arrie Rawlinson, Chelsa went to be with the Lord August 31, 2010. She passed away peacefully with family around her. Chelsa grew up in the Cushing and Looneyville area and graduated from Cushing High School. She then moved to California and worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" employee for an aircraft company during World War II. Later in life she worked at other jobs, but she really enjoyed selling furniture in her brother Bill Rawlinson's furniture store in Galena Park, Texas. After returning to East Texas, Chelsa began to write the Looneyville News for the The Daily Sentinel in Nacogdoches. She lived most of her life in Looneyville where she felt at home and peaceful. After becoming ill with Alzheimer's disease, her last five years were spent in Dallas. Chelsa was preceded in death by her parents, Rush and Arrie Rawlinson; five brothers, Talmage, Winton, Buford, Aubrey and Buster; her sister, Toxie Denny; her husband, Bill Handler; and daughter, Jane McElroy. She is survived by her brother, Rush Clinton "Pee Wee" Rawlinson and wife, Verla May, of Livingston, Texas; daughter, Judy Mullins and husband, Eddy, of Murphy, Texas; son, Bobby Handler and wife, Grace, of Looneyville, Texas; along with grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chelsa was a loving, caring and spiritual person who put God first and was always willing to give of herself. She was known for her chocolate pie and peach cobbler at neighborhood gatherings and church socials. She was a fierce 42 player and kept herself informed about current events until her illness. She molded the lives of her children and grandchildren by being a wonderful example of a caring parent. She touched the lives of many friends and was highly respected and loved for her gentle spirit. Chelsa was a member of the Looneyville Community Church. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Dickie Allen Funeral Home in Cushing, Texas. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at the Friendship Cemetery near Looneyville. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Garnet Hill nursing center and the Harris Hospice for their loving care of their mother. Also a very special thank-you to Judy and Eddie Mullins for "being there" on a daily basis for Chelsa. Dickie Allen Funeral Home, Cushing.
