James Sidney "Sid" Smith, 37, died Saturday in Converse County Memorial Hospital three weeks after he had been gassed by fumes from a fire extinguisher. Sid had been awakened by a fire in his trailer house and had quelled the flames with the extinguisher. He then went back to bed and was poisoned by the gas. Sid Smith was born May 14, 1913 at Winterset, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Smith. He moved with his parents to Douglas at the age of four and later moved to Glenrock where he attended grade and high schools. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder a year and studied voice on the west coast for two years. He was a featured singer and master of ceremonies on the West Coast and later entertained at Casper and Douglas, singing and playing the Hammond organ at the College Inn at the time of the accident. He was married in Casper, Wyo. to Charlotte Stout. One son, Raleigh Sidney Smith was born to this union. He is survived by his parents, his father being the Converse County Treasurer; two sisters, Patsy Smith of Douglas and Mrs. Catherine Gaither and two children, Patsy and Jimmy, now living in Heidelberg, Germany, where Col. L. E. Gaither is stationed. His aunt, Mrs. May Shearer of Peru, Iowa was here for the funeral. (Information was obtained from his obituary by Betty Alberts, FAG Member #47293729.)
