Eugenia Blanch McCamant Higgins

Mrs. Blanche McCamant Higgins, 80, wife of Clayton H Higgins, well known Grayson county citizen, died at the family home at Oldtown, Wednesday morning, June 8th.

Mrs. Higgins was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson McCamant and wife, Mrs. Ellen Hale McCamant, who was a daughter of the late Maj. Peyton G Hale, of Elk Creek, known as one of the “Big Four” in the Virginia State Senate at the time of the heated debates on the question of “Funding or Readjusting” of the state debate, in 1882.

Mrs. Higgins grandfather, the late Col. Samuel McCamant, was also a member of the State Senate. The present Higgins residence at Oldtown was formerly the old McCamant homestead. She was the first cousin of the late Judge R L Kirby of Independence, whose mother also was a daughter of Maj Hale.

Surviving Mrs. Higgins, besides the husband, are one son, McCamant Higgins, Galax, and two sisters, Mrs. Marvin Vaughan, Spring Valley, and Mrs. Fred Armfield, who resides near Low Gap in Surry County, NC, on what was formerly the old Governor Franklin farm, on Fisher River.

Funeral services were held at the Oldtown Presbyterian Church today (Thursday) at 2:30 pm, by the Rev George H Murray, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Dr. D Sidney McCarty, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Airy, NC.
The body was taken to the church at 1:30 pm, from the home, where it had been since Wednesday afternoon when it was removed from Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Interment was in the family cemetery at Oldtown.
Pallbearers were Joe Folger, C M Vaughan Jr, Buck Smith, Dan C Roberts, Fred J Roberts, Ned Anderson, Lester Bartlett, Wren Bartlett, and Ben Witherow. Floral tributes were carried by relatives and friends of the family.
