Jean Elizabeth Hoadley Peterson

A 55-year old retired nurse and nursing teacher, Mrs. Peterson was the daughter of Virginia and Walter Hoadley and the mother of daughters Jennifer, Grace and Catherine Price. She was the sister of Richard Hoadley. She attended Duke University for two years before transferring to the University of Rochester and earning a nursing degree. She received her master's of education degree from Columbia University and taught nursing in New Jersey for several years. She also became an emergency medical technician. Once retired, she spent much of her time in volunteer work for her church and community. The "tireless volunteer" traveled to Massachusetts two weeks before her death to hold her first grandchild, Charlotte. On September 11th she and her husband, Donald Peterson were on their way to a family reunion in Yosemite National Park. They were scheduled to take a later flight but at the airport they changed to flight 93 because it was less crowded. The memorial service for the couple drew so many mourners, many of whom had been helped or counseled by the Petersons, that it had to be moved to a larger venue nearby. The pastor of their church, Reverend Jim Loveland said, "I wasn't on that plane, but I believe I know what happened. At the end, I'm sure they were praying and ministering with the others, encouraging them to be right with the Lord. That's what their lives were about." (Bio by: Melanie)
