Carr, Maurice Kilner
Age 91, died January 9, 2009, at St. Anthony's Medical Center, St. Louis, MO, after a brief illness. Mr. Carr was born June 16, 1917, in Rodgers Park (Chicago), Illinois, to the late Maurice Leroy Carr and Louise Millicent Kilner. He was reared in Avon, Illinois. On October 23, 1943, he married Cecelia Francis Harmon, who preceded him in death on April 5, 1984. On February 10, 1990, Mr. Carr married Kathleen Crump, who still resides in St. Louis. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Carr and his wife, Nevada of Traverse City, MI; by his son Maurice Francis Carr and his wife, Mary Maud, of Bunkie, LA; son James Carr and his wife Judy of Denver, CO; son John Carr and his wife, Nancy, of St. Joseph, MI; son Michael Carr and his wife Christine of Avon Lake, OH; daughter Mary Louise Carr of Barcelona, Spain, daughter Susan Bower and her husband Ron of Ann Arbor; daughter Patricia Gunnis of Ann Arbor; 20 grandchildren, including Ronnie Bower and his wife Eva of Northville, MI; Rachel Bower Scharer and her husband Ryan of Adrian, MI; Randy Bower of Ann Arbor; Shawna Gunnis Herod and her husband Mike of Elizabethtown, KY; Christina Gunnis Rankin and her husband John of Ft. Lewis, WA; William Gunnis and Melissa Gunnis of Ann Arbor; and ten great grandchildren. Mr. Carr attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, an electrical engineering honor society founded by his father. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1939. After graduation, Maurice worked as an engineer for the American Optical Corporation in Buffalo, NY until joining the U.S. Army at the start of World War II in 1942. After discharge from the Army in 1946, Mr. Carr and his family moved to Ann Arbor where he served as Chief Engineer for Argus Cameras. Considered an expert in optical design and optical engineering, he founded his own engineering consulting firm, ClanCarr Development, in Ann Arbor in 1977. Mr. Carr retired in 1998 and moved with his wife, Kathleen, to St. Louis. During his years in Ann Arbor, he was particularly proud of working with the Southeastern Michigan Science Fair, an annual event featuring science and engineering exhibits by junior and senior high school students throughout the southeastern Michigan area. He served as a judge and supervisor of judges, as well as director of the Science Fair in 1981. He was involved with the Science Fair over 23 years. Mr. Carr was also active in St. Thomas the Apostle parish, where he served as Parish Council member and President. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth St. in Ann Arbor. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, January 19, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor. Memorials may be made to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202.
