In 1869 he was appointed special deputy assessor, US Dept of Revenue, a position he filled until 1871. He was long prominent in the councils of the Republican party, and was executive member of the Republican General Committee from 1870 to 1875 and in 1881, a member from 1870 to 1881 from the 19th Assembly District, and in 1893 from the 22nd District. Mr. Greene was counsel, secretary, treasurer and president of the North Second St. and Middle Village Railroad, and president of the Brooklyn, Bushwick and Queens County Railroad. Mr. Green has given largely of his time and means to genealogical research, and his work has come to bear the stamp of authority. He was historian general, 1894-1898; secretary general, 1899, and from the time to the present has been first deputy governor general.
Among Richard Green's published works are the "Greene Family of Plymouth Colony 1909", "William Webb, 1746-1832, Ancestry and Descendants 1914", and is the editor of the
"Genealogical Record", and "Mayflower Leaves". Richard Greene is the originator, number 1, of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1894; a founder of the Order of Runnymede; corresponding member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, of Boston, MA, life member of the NY Genealogical and Biographical Society; member of NY SAR, Society of Colonial Wars; Society of American Wars; Society of the War of 1812; member of the NY Historical and American Historical societies; member of George Washington Post, and past commander, Grand Army of the Republic; member of Wolfs Head Club; the Yale Club; and the Army and Navy Club, of NY, among other things.
Richard was the son of William Webb Green, a merchant and ship owner; son of Richard and Sally (Webb) Green; descendant of William Green, who came to America from England before 1700 and settled at Plymouth, Mass.
His mother was Sarah Ann (Todd) Green; daughter of Col. William Whetten Todd and Maria Caroline (Duffle) Todd; descendant of Adam Todd, who came to this country from Scotland about 1700 and settled in New York City.
Richard married in New Haven CT, on June 20, 1867, Mary Gertrude Munson, daughter of Captain Edward Beech Munson and Amelia Caty (Sperry), born April 18, 1846 in Woodbridge, CT. Children: William Todd (died in childhood); Marshall Winslow, a non-graduate member of the Class of 1890 at the College of the City of New York (died in 1921); Maude Eloise (died in childhood); Edna Munson (Mrs Augustus Thatcher Holbrook); and DePeyster and Arthur Garfield (both died in infancy).
