MAJ LeRoy Wilton Homer, Jr

First officer Homer, from Marlton, New Jersey, was in his sixth year with United Airlines. He grew up in Long Island, New York with eight siblings. He earned his first pilot’s license at the age of 16. In 1987 he graduated with the rank of captain from the Air Force Academy where he specialized in flying C-141B Starlifters, heavy transport planes. He was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey with the 18th Military Airlift Squadron. He flew during the Persian Gulf War and achieved the rank of major in 1999. He and his wife Melodie Thorpe Homer were married on May 24, 1998 and were the parents of one daughter, Laurel. Major Homer was posthumously awarded an honorary membership in the Tuskegee Airmen.
