Fraternal Organization's First President Was Ill Long Time

John E. Craigo, 61, retired patrolman and first president of the Charleston chapter, Fraternal Order of Police, died about 3 p. m. yesterday at his home in Wyoming street after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 20, 1877, at Raymond City, the son of the late Madison Craigo and Angeline Kersey Craigo. In 1898, Craigo enlisted in company A of the 2nd West Virginia regiment and served as corporal for the duration of the Spanish-American war. He was a member of the Kanawha camp of Spanish-American Veterans.

Coal Foreman
Before coming to Charleston 15 years ago, he was foreman for the Kanawha and Hocking Coal company at Carbondale. He became member of the Charleston police department during the first administration of Mayor W. W. Wertz and served in the department until his retirement because of ill health in November, 1937.

Craigo was instrumental in the organization of the Capital chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police and served as president for two terms. He was a brother of the late Capt. J. M. Craigo, veteran police officer and court clerk, who died several years ago.

Funeral Tomorrow
Craigo was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist church and is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Katherine Turley, Mrs. V. H. Selman and Mrs. Madge Frashier, all of Charleston; two sons, J. A. Craigo of Ansted and S. A. Craigo of Charleston; two sisters, Mrs. G. W. Wright of Raymond City and Mrs. Oliver Carnes of Charleston; three brothers, W. W. Craigo of Levi, W. E. Craigo of Carbondale and R. E. Craigo of Scott Depot; and eight grandchildren.

The body was taken to Bartlett's mortuary, pending funeral services tomorrow afternoon.
