The son of (Living) Johnson and (Living) Barnes, Rusty was born in Eagle Pass, Texas. The family returned to Kampsville in Calhoun County, Illinois shortly after his birth.

He moved to Pawnee, Illinois shortly before his death.

Rusty was involved in a motorcycle accident at 10:14 p.m. on 31 May 2003 in Christian County, Illinois. He was riding a 1990 Harley-Davidson on a rural road south of Illinois Route 4, west of Tovey. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Rusty's condition seemed to be improving, but he suffered a sudden stroke and brain hemorrhage that led to his death at St. John's Hospital 4 days after the wreck. He was 21 years, 1 month and 7 days old when he passed away.

Survivors included his parents; 5 brothers, including half-brothers; and 6 sisters, including half-sisters; and 20 nieces and nephews.

Rusty was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Edward R. Johnson; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Barnes.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on 09 Jun 2003 at at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the charity of one's choice.
