The community was deeply saddened Sunday morning by the news of the death of Mrs. Mattie McKay, which occurred at a Creston hospital Sunday morning, March 8, 1936. Mrs. McKay had undergone an operation the next day after she entered the hospital four weeks ago and it was found that her condition was hopeless. She was given every care and attention possible and her husband remained constantly at her side during her illness.

Mattie J. Badgett, daughter of Richard W. and Rosa P. Badgett, was born January 24, 1890 in Weston, Oregon. She came to Taylor county with her family in 1901 and after five years residence in Taylor county the family moved to Adams county, which has since been her home. December 30, 1915, she was married to Florance McKay in Corning. To this union two children, Melvin and Irene, were born, and these, with the husband, remain to mourn the loss of this splendid wife and mother. She is survived by three brothers and three sisters. These are: Malissa Key of Freewater, Oregon; Emma Beamer of Weston, Oregon; Geo. Badgett of Emida, Idaho; Etta Fulk, Vass, North Caroline; King Badgett and Robert Badgett of Corning. Colman Badgett, a brother, died August 1, 1902. She is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces, Mrs. Octavia McKay, her husband's mother, and many admiring friends who will grieve with the family. She was 46 years, 1 month and 14 days old.

Mrs. McKay united with the Mercer Center Methodist Episcopal church under the ministry of the Rev. A.E. Moore and she has been a devoted member. She was also active in the Farm Union Auxiliary and was interested in all things educational and uplifting.
