LEVI PERRY WILLITS
Levi Perry Willits, was the son of James Monroe & Sarah A. (Myers) Willits. His paternal grandparents were Levi & Rachel (Field) Willits and maternal grandparents were Col Andrew & Mary (Lloyd) Myers. The Willits and Myers were amoung the early settlers and prominent families from New Boston, Mercer County, Illinois. Levi was most likely named after his grandpa Levi, but his mother had two brothers name William Perry Myers and Levi Willits Myers who were both delegates to the newly formed Republican Party and used to brag that they were Republican when their good friend Abraham Lincoln was still just a Whig!

SIBLINGS & FAMILY
Levi came from a large family. His parents had five children but sadly when he was only 5 years old, his mother passed away on 23 Sep 1847 at the age of 25. {NOTE: Records state that Sarah (Myers) Willits died just 13 days after the birth of her daughter Orpha Miranda, who was born in 1849 BUT Sarah's tombstone clearly says she died in 1847?}. After his mothers death, Levi's father James married again to Sarah A. Prouty and they had six more children. Most of Levi's family are buried in the New Boston Cemetery, in Mercer County, Illinois.

His siblings included:
William Henry (b. 1843)
Viola Jane (b. 1844)
James Lloyd b. 1847)
Orpha Miranda (b. 1849)

Frederick (b. 1858)
Courtney (b. 1867)

Levi Willits enlisted with his brother William Henry in Company I, 17th Ill Inf. The two were immediately transferred to Co A, 8th Ill Infantry. Levi mustered out May 4, 1866. He is not found in the 1870 census in Mercer County but must have been looking for land in Iowa.

MARRIAGE
After his trip to secure land in Iowa, he returned to Mercer County and married Maria Shields, daughter of William and Lucy (Wilson) Shields.
