Deborah T. Waterhouse was born in Trenton, N.J. December 5, 1832, and subsequent to that time resided in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, finally coming to Iowa in May 1846. While in Ohio, Deborah was a classmate of future President Benjamin Harrison.

On September 4, 1853, Deborah was united in marriage to P. D. Bailey at Burlington. After a short residence at Mt. Pleasant, they came to Louisa County where they have since resided. To them were born seven children, all of whom with the husband and father survive. They are: James M., of California; John C., near Oakville; Sarah Jane, wife of A. Wilson of Maxwell, Neb.; Amanda E., wife of Chas. Lee, of Wyoming; Wm., of Newport, Iowa; Taylor, of Oakville and Tirzah, wife of E. G. Erbes, of Boise City, Idaho.
