Born in Eldred Township,Jefferson county,Pennsylvania;he came to Punxsutawney in 1857.He taught two terms of school then attended Allegheny College[in Meadville,Crawford county,Pennsylvania],lacking one term for graduating.
It is believed that he was studying for the Ministry during his time at Allegheny and that his fathers death took him away from his studies prematurely.

His Civil War Experiences:
He enlisted in the volunteer service on 28 August 1861,as a sergeant in Company I,105th Regiment. He was wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness on 6 May and also at Petersburg on 16 June 1864.He was commissioned as First-Lieutenant of Company I ,on 1 January 1865 and was discharged on 23 July 1865.

After the War:
He returned after the close of the war and was elected County Commissioner;served two terms as the Postmaster of the State Senate and was later employed for three years in the State Historian Department in Harrisburg,Pennsylvania.
In 1875,he was admitted into the Jefferson County Bar and enjoyed a lucrative practice and took and active part in the local politics of the times.
He became a member of the M.E. Church at Clarington in 1853,where he was the Superintendent of the Sabbath Schools.
until failing health forced him to resign.
He was thought to have been one of the best classical scholars in the county; capable of speaking both Latin & Greek and holding a deep knowledge of the Law.

He died at his residence in Punxsutawney of Consumption at the age of fifty-one years.
