Merlin John Shaw was born Jan 8, 1912, in Murray to George F. and Lula E. Labrum Shaw.
Dr. Shaw was assistant professor of religion at Brigham Young University, where he had served since 1959 after receiving an Ed.D. from the University of California at Berkely. He received his B.A. from the University of Utah in 1938 and his M.S. in 1945.
He was an active member of the LDS Church. Dr. Shaw was co-founder of Socotwa School Expeditions, the organization which sponsored the fatal trip.

On June 10, 1937, he married Mildred Ottley in the Salt Lake Temple.
Survivors include his widow; sons, Varol Edward, 23, David Owen 17, who also was involved in the accident, and George Glade, 12; daughters, Mrs. Heidi Ann Birch, 24, Merlene, 18, and Irene, 9.
