and Anna (Hespen) Loontjer on May 15, 1929, in Deshler
(Kiowa) and passed away Aug. 29, 2010, at the Fillmore
County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 81 years, three
months and 14 days.
He was the youngest of five children in the family.
He was baptized June 2, 1929, and confirmed on April
18, 1943, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kiowa. He
attended Deshler High School and graduated in 1947.

Along with working on the family farm, Lawrence at the
age of 16 went to work at the Deshler Gambles store.

He was drafted into the army in the fall of 1950 and trained
at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. For three years, he was
stationed in Sendai, Japan.
While there he also attended school in Etajima. He returned
home to Deshler in February of 1953.
Lawrence was married to Darlene Laura Garrels at
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kiowa on April 5, 1953, and
to them three children were born.

They were married for 57 years first living in Hebron
where Lawrence worked for Gambles.
They lived in Hebron for 13 years before moving to Geneva
in 1966 where Lawrence started work for Gambles of Geneva
owned by Vaughn Fulton.
Upon Fulton's retirement and his son, Glen's college graduation,
Lawrence and two of his children, Glen and Yvonne, formed a
Corporation buying the Gambles/Do-It Best store in 1984 where he
worked until his death. At the time of his death, Lawrence
had worked in the hardware business for 65 years.

Lawrence was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in
Geneva, the VFW and a past-president of the Geneva Chamber
of Commerce.

Lawrence always remained a farmer deep at heart.
He was an avid gardener who shared the great bounty of his garden
with friends and neighbors and whose beautiful flower garden
was a source of pride.

He was at all times first a family man who was a caring son, brother,
husband and father and a proud and loving grandfather and great-
grandfather. He took great joy in attending his children's and
grandchildren's activities especially watching their athletic
endeavors.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reinhard and Anna; brothers,
George, Arnold and Herman and his sister Mrs. Richard (Ella) Deterding
of Hebron.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Geneva; daughters, Mrs. Roger (Marilyn)
Paustian and Mrs. Scott (Yvonne) Carson of Omaha and his son, Glen and
daughter-in-law Lori of Geneva; grandchildren, Andrea Seitz, Wendi McDowell,
Kyle Paustian, Chase Carson, Cara Carson, Meg Loontjer and Tyler Loontjer and great-
Grandchildren, Michael Seitz, Alex McDowell, John Paustian, Kyra Paustian, Maria
Paustian, Jeremiah Paustian, Nathanial Paustian, and Carter Carson.

Funeral services were conducted from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in
Geneva on Sept. 2 with the Rev. Richard Woolard and the Rev. Delmar
Klover officiating. Mrs. Andy (Sharie) Hubert accompanied James Seitz who
sang "Amazing Grace" and the Rev. Delmar Klover who sang "The Old Rugged Cross."
Pallbearers were Robert Deterding, Dick Heinrichs, Kevin Loontjer, Russell Loontjer and
Jim Pederson.
Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Allgood, Jerry Herman, Hubert Johnson, Mel
Krause and Dick Trapp.
Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery with military honors.
Farmer and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials are directed to the family for later use.
