Martin's father's name was David and his mother's name was Abigail Wilcox. They were married in 1842 in Illinois. Martin had two sisters who were both born in Iowa, Matilda Jane (born around 1849) and Mary E. (born around 1853). Martin's father married again in 1866. (Still researching to find out what happened to Abigail.) His second wife was Sarah Ann Nicholson, and they had two more daughters, Martha (born around 1868 in Iowa) and Mina (born around 1872 in Nebraska).

The date of the marriage of Martin and Mary Jane Sinclair has not been officially documented. But, according to his obituary, they married in 1864. Mary Jane already had one daughter by her first marriage, Alice Josephine. Martin and Mary Jane had eight more children: John, Sarah, Charles, Louie May, twins Cora and Dora, Edna and Amanda.

Martin was not only a soldier, he was a buffalo hunter, homesteader in Thomas county, Kansas, and he worked as a guard at the Lansing Penitentiary in Kansas.
