Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Albany, New York, at the start of the Civil War he was an officer in the New York National Guard. Organized as the 1st Albany Regiment in May 1861, he was later commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the 3rd New York Infantry Regiment. He served with designation the entire war with the 3rd New York in engagements from Virginia to the Carolinas. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in August, 1865.
