Arminta “Minta” Belle Clem Wing

Arminta Belle Clem was born in Missouri, the daughter of Hiram Clem and Emily Arminta Reger, granddaughter of Enoch Clem and Mary Polly Tipton Clem. Her family moved to Oklahoma in the 1890s, but in 1897 her father was killed by a bolt of lightning (in Garfield County, where he is buried). Minta was just 17. In 1896 Minta had married Daniel Webster Dover. They had two children, Leota and Ralph; and for some years they also cared for three of Minta’s fatherless younger siblings.

Minta left Daniel in 1909, he divorced her in 1910. By then she had met Gail Wing, a native of Mills County, Iowa. They moved to Vici in Dewey County, Oklahoma, where Minta’s grandfather Enoch and other family members were living, and married 17 May 1911, later settling on a farm southeast of Camargo in Dewey County. After their marriage, Minta’s son Ralph came to live with them and was adopted by Gail Wing. Ralph later married a daughter of another native of Mills County, Iowa.

In 1919 Minta and Gail moved into Camargo where Gail had purchased a hardware store downtown and a house across the street from the Christian Church. The house occupied a full quarter of a city block. Minta worked hard to develop the large lot into a beautiful flower garden – unique in the town – featuring three lily ponds complete with goldfish and masses of flowers and shrubbery. It was a remarkable showplace that brought her great pleasure.

Minta and Gail adopted two more sons – Edwin and Duane Donaldson (D.D.). Edwin died in a hunting accident when he was only 12. Minta and Gail established a memorial library in his name at the Christian Church across from their home. D. D. grew up to graduate from Camargo High School, served in the Korean War, then moved to South Carolina where he married.

Ralph and Leota had both married earlier and raised families of grandchildren for Minta and Gail to enjoy. Gail died in 1944; Minta lived a full life, passing in 1960 at 80 years old. She is still remembered by her many descendants.
