"Former Judge Is Stricken
BERKELEY, June 16. - Judge Austin A. Sanderson, 86, former judge of the San Francisco Superior Court and for more than 50 years a member of the California Bar, died here yesterday.
Judge Sanderson was born in what is now Elmira, N. Y. on January 4, 1848, but received his legal education in New Jersey, where he was admitted to practice.
In 1879 he came to California and had practiced continuously since that time, except for his period of service on the bench. Officials of the California State Bar said he was the oldest practicing attorney in the State. During his years on the bench he presided over numerous important trials, including Miller & Lux litigation that made legal history in California. He was a member of the Union League Club of San Francisco.
One of the proudest episodes of his life, however, was his trip to London with the Bar Association delegation when he was 77 years of age, and his meeting with King George there.
Surviving Judge Sanderson are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Fryer of Santa Barbara and Mrs. Fowler Mallett of Berkeley, with whom he had made his home. He also leaves a brother, Mark M. Sanderson of Ellsworth, Wis., and three grand-children, Austin S. Mallett, Helen T. Mallett and John G. Fryer of New York.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday [?] the home at 2905 Pine Ave. [?]. Cremation will follow." END
