Rilla Malinda Gee Johnson Nielsen

Rilla was born on January 30, 1899 in Dover, Utah to Frank Walsom Gee and Cecilia Anna Olsen. When she was nine months old her family moved to Fayette, Utah . She had two brothers and one sister. Rilla was baptized in the muddy water of the Fayette Canal. She went to school in Fayette through the eighth grade. Then she attended school in Gunnison for two years, in the old City Hall. They would ride a White Top Buggy to school. In the winter, their mothers would warm rocks in the oven at night and then in the morning, place them in the bottom of the buggy. This is how the children would keep their feet warm.

Rilla enjoyed sleigh rides, ice skating, and singing around bonfires. She also enjoyed dancing.

Rilla lived in Fayette, Ephriam, Salt Lake City, Woodruff and Gunnison.

She was married to Arthur Johnson on 26 Nov 1920 and was married to him for 29 years all spent in Fayette. After he died she married Niels Peter Nielsen on 11 Nov 1953 and they lived in Gunnison for 22 years before Niels died.

If you asked her, she would tell you every one of those 51 years of marriage with her two husbands were 51 years of happiness.

Rilla was a talented lady. She enjoyed crocheting. She was very good at handwork. She made 169 quilts and gave them all away. Even when she got so she had a hard time seeing, Rilla still cut pieces for quilt tops which she gave away.

Her life was one of great service. For instance, she was a Relief Society visiting teacher for 58 years; worked in Mutual organization in the Fayette Ward for 15 years, serving as a counselor to three different presidents. She served as 4-leader; as a captain in DUP; in the American Legion Auxliary.

She and her husband Arthur, were chairmen of the Fayette Old Folks Committee for 17 years and served in the Gunnison Stake Old Folks Committee for 12 years.

They served 2 ½ years as Stake Missionaries.

Rilla served 3 years on the Stake Sunday School Board and a 6 month mission at the Manti Temple. She was also Jr. Sunday School coordinator for 2 years.

She was the only teacher of a special Seminary class held in Fayette and also served in the Fayette Primary for 27 years as organist, secretary and teacher. On July 24, 1932 Rilla was sustained as a ward principal of Junior Seminary and was released on May 6, 1933.

A TRIBUTE TO MY MOTHER, RILLA GEE NIELSEN OF GUNNISON

By Nila D. Kiesel 28 January 1981
She was born 30 Jan 1899 and she lived to be 85 years old.

Mother was born in Dover, Utah, the Dtr of Frank W. GEE and Anna Cecilia OLSEN. When she was 9 months old they moved to Fayette where she grew up.

In 1920 she married Elias Arthur JOHNSON, a 1st World War Veteran who served overseas. During their married life they moved to Ephraim where they lived when I joined them. My mother died when I was a baby. Their families accepted and loved me dearly, as I did them.

We later moved to Woodruf, Utah near the Wyoming border—a very cold country. So we soon came back to Ephraim and then eventually to Fayette.

When Dad JOHNSON died in 1949 mother spent 4 yrs alone before meeting and marrying Niels P. NIELSEN. Dad NIELSEN and I grew to love and respect each other and I here want to say that the NIELSENS are very fine people whom I too love and respect. We have become real friends over the years.

The first time my mother saw me I was a small baby laying in someone else's house. They fell in love with me instantly. I and her husband Elias Arthur JOHNSON were cousins. Sometime later they took me into their home and their home became my home. They became the only family I knew and our love for each other has since grown by leaps and bounds. Dad JOHNSON used to say, "I love this cousin more than any cousin I have."

As I grew up we three met obstacles together; they happily and without thought of themselves or hesitation made sacrifices for my well-being. Their lives were one of service and love, not only for me; but for everyone they came in contact with. They served family, friends and the gospel. They were civic leaders and faithful church members, answering all the calls where God needed them. Following the footsteps of their ancestors it was a wholehearted service that they gave; putting all their efforts into it: their hearts, strength, mind, time and money. Years were spent in the service of their God.

I have never heard neither one of them backing or suggesting that you should do less than your best. They were righteous people and did not favor this unrighteousness of anyone. Such acts were demeaning.

In asking their advice I was always told to do that which was right so we would never have any regrets.

She has been given a sharp mind so that her memory is better than people many years younger than she. She grew up when our nation was young and can and does relate stories of that time which visitors find spell-binding, and her association is enjoyed by all. She advises many and will criticize you if she feels it necessary for your own good. She encourages righteousness in all she meets and prays for strength and faith that she may add all things righteously herself.

She is an influence for good and righteousness, I LOVE HER, and I always will. Everything good that I am, I aimed for with the encouragement and love of this good woman and her dear husbands- of which she had two. She is someone very special- not only to me and others, but also to God. She is a child of God, Loved by God, doing her best here on earth. Her reward on high will be great.
