Masons Hold Services for J. H. Harkness

Funeral services were held this morning for J. H. Harkness, one of the old residents of this section, who died Monday, following a short illness. It was only a short time ago, on October 1st, that Mr. and Mrs. Harkness celebrated their golden wedding at their home in Paradise Valley.

Mr. and Mrs. Harkness were married in Hyndman, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, October 1, 1879. Mr. Harkness was a telegraph operator and station agent for the Baltimore and Ohio Railway Company, serving the company in this capacity for 35 years without mising [sic] a pay envelope.

In 1906 they came to California and located in Paradise Valley on the ranch across the creek from their present home. A year later they moved to this place and for 22 years have resided on this same place.

Mr. Harkness leaves five children in addition to his widow; G. H. and R. L. Harkness, of Paradise Valley, Tom and Glen Harkness, of San Jose, and Paul Harkness, of Davenport.

Besides their own children they raised six grandchildren, granddaughters, Mazie and Catherine, daughters of Tom Harkness, and Joe Henry, a son of their daughter, Mrs. Harry Musser, having lived with them.
