Phil Dhondt

Phil Joseph Dhondt, 69, Sherrard, formerly of East Moline, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 1997, at home in rural Sherrard.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery.

Visitation is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Matherville, with a rosary service at 3:30. Additional visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a liturgy service
will be read at 4:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or for Masses.

He was born July 21, 1928, in East Moline, the son of Theophiel and LeonaDhond t. He married Virginia Grossell Aug. 13, 1955, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island.

He owned and operated D&D IGA grocery store in East Moline with his brother for 10 years, and later welded at John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline,retiring Aug. 1, 1990.

He was a member of St. Mary's for 45 years before becoming a member of St. Anthony's in 1973.

He was active in parish council and as a eucharistic minister and greeter. He was also involved in the Cursillo, TEC and charismatic movements.

Mr. Dhondt was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1945 to 1948. He enjoyed camping, sports and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; sons and daughters-in-law William and Jodi D'Hondt, Coal Valley, and Jon and Krystal Dhondt, Granite Falls, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law Theresa and Joseph Fusilier, River Falls, Wis., and
Lisa and Chris Whan, Sherrard; grandchildren Christopher and Caitlin D'Hondt and Amanda, Elizabeth, Roxanne and Thomas Fusilier; a brother, Joseph Dhondt, East Moline, and a sister, Margaret Slock, Moline. He is preceded
in death by a brother, Maurice Dhooge.
