Graveside services for Berdine Adams, 88, of Nacogdoches, Texas, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Dock Lazarine officiating.
Full military honors will be provided by the honor guard from Fort Hood. Mr. Adams was born December 9, 1919, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the son of the late Lewis Adams and Ida Hall Adams and passed away April 3, 2008, in Nacogdoches.
Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1937 to 1946, attaining the rank of corporal.
He was captured when American forces on Bataan surrendered to the Japanese. Mr. Adams was in the 31st Infantry Regiment as a machine gunner. He was held as a prisoner of war for three years and four months in the Philippines and Japan. He was liberated shortly after the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, which was 28 miles from where he was being held prisoner. He was the last living Nacogdoches County resident known to have been a prisoner of war during World War II.
After serving his country, Berdine worked as a self-employed log cutter until his retirement. He married Martha Louise Tubbe on June 6, 1949, in Nacogdoches, Texas, and she survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Betty Land and husband, Kent, of Nacogdoches, Texas; a son, Frank Adams and wife, Judy, of Mesquite, Texas. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
