Isaac was the son of John Craig Black and Clarissa Jones.

Isaac married Mildred Ballinger Cheek 14 Jan 1852 in Knox Co KY.

Isaac was the 3rd cousin 4x's removed of Lee Smith.

After Confederate forces under Brigadier General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer, came through Cumberland Gap into Kentucky on September 9, 1861 on a detachment entered Barbourville on September 19. Commanded by Captain Isaac J. Black, the local Home Guard met the invaders in what is referred to as the Battle of Barbourville, the first battle/skirmish of the Civil War in Kentucky.
