Amy S. Adams was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, June 13, 1825, and died March 14, 1910, at the home of her son J.A. Markwell in Belmont township, Kingman county, Kansas. Thus she lived on earth 84 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was married to Alexander Markwell in the year 1840, who died in Menard county, Illinois, in November of 1856 [s/b 15 Dec 1857]. Seven children were born to this union, two boys and five girls. Of the seven, four still survive: Sarah E. Bradley of Petersburg, Ill., Elizabeth Power of Greenview, Ill., W.P. Markwell of Wichita, Kans., and J.A. Markwell of Cleveland, Kans., and one brother, B.H. Adams of Petersburg, Ill. besides many grandchildren -- she living to see the fifth generation.
She became a Christian early in childhood and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. She was a faithful and consistent member of the church until her death. Her spotless character in all the walks of life is a priceless heritage to her children. For many years she was a great sufferer, yet amid it all her confidence in Christ was first and her faith was triumphant. In her latter years of suffering she often spoke of being ready and waiting the summons to "come up higher." The immediate cause of her death was an accident in falling downstairs on the Thursday evening before her death.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.M. Alexander of Cleveland, at the home of her son J.A. Markwell, and her body laid to rest in the Cleveland cemetery.
