Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Pearson Funeral Church, 301 N.E. Knott Street, for Ephraim Day Smith, 84, who died Tuesday at his home, 32 N.E. Russell Street. Mr. Smith, eldest son of the late Capt. William Smith, pioneer Columbia bar pilot, was born March 29, 1864, in the family home at N.W. 2d Avenue and Ankeny Street.

He attended Portland schools and became a carpenter and cabinet maker. He made the wooden patterns for the frescoes that adorn the lobby of the Multnomah hotel.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Fred Wertz; a grandson, Ward Wertz, and two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Richards of Portland and Mrs. Katie Dick of Lewiston, Idaho.

Rev. John W. Beard will officiate at the funeral services, with interment in the family plot at Lone Fir Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Samuel Jones, John Matthews, John Pilgrim, Jack Webster, William Robson, and Julius Leitch.
