When her mother came down with influenza shortly after her birth, Margaret was unable to nurse. The family had no milk available, so sweet potatoes were boiled to a watery paste and put into cheesecloth for the baby to suckle for survival, which she obviously did.

She had to work hard on the family farm in her youth, and there were many times of tight money throughout her life; but things always worked out and she rarely wanted for little. She was a talented embroiderer and loved to teach her skills to her nieces. She had to drop out of school to work on the farm, and she would have loved to have been a teacher. She loved to read. She read books aloud to her son: books such as Little Women, Little Men, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Black Beauty, Beautiful Joe, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and other classics.

She was baptized and joined Cornith Baptist Church, Johnston County, NC when she was about 15; and with the many moves brought about by Max's job as a power shovel operator, Margaret moved her letter to a new church, and quickly became active in Sunday School and the Women's Missionary Union. The Baptist Church was the anchor in her life, as well as her entry into the small town society.

She went to her reward having realized and expressed love.
