James Aswell, called Aswell, was the last of the ten children, and the fifth son, of Harvey Quitman Yarborough (1858-1949) and Margaret Alyne (Maggie) Breeden (1869-1921. He was born on his parents' farm in Liverpool, St. Helena Parish, LA.

The census of 1940 indicates that in 1935 and 1940, he lived with family of his brother Harvey Quitman Jr. in Greensburg and worked as a carpenter's helper on school construction. On 30 March 1941, Aswell married Edna (called Bobbye) Robert (1920-2005). The couple had two children, James Aswell (Jimmy) Jr. and Gloria Jean Yarborough. He enlisted on 3 May 1941 at Jacksonville Army Air Field in Florida and earned the Purple Heart for valor in U. S. Army service during the Second World War.

In 1954, the city directory of Baton Rouge lists the family at 31 Benton Lane; Aswell worked for Esso as a pipefitter. In 1992, his address was 1080 Benton Lane in Denham Springs.

Aswell Yarborough was buried on Feb. 5, 2000 at Day's United Methodist Church Cemetery in Liverpool, LA.
