Roman Catholic Cardinal, Vicar General of Rome. After ordination as a Catholic priest in 1902, Micara began a diplomatic career in the Vatican Secretariat of State, serving in the nunciatures to Argentina, Belgium, and Austria. In 1920 he was appointed the first Vatican nuncio to Czechoslovakia and ordained bishop in 1921. He was named nuncio to Belgium and internuncio to Luxemburg in 1923, positions he held through 1946, while spending the years of Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944 in Rome. In 1946 Pope Pius XII made Micara Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria sopra Minerva and Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni and appointed him to several administrative posts in the Vatican curia. In 1951 Micara was appointed Vicar General of Rome, serving the day-to-day administration of the diocese of Rome in the name of the pope until his death in 1965. His great work was to build churches, hospitals, and other social institutions in the rebuilding and expanding years after the Second World War. He voted in the conclave of 1958, which elected Pope John XXIII, and in the conclave of 1963, as a progressive with influence with conservatives, brought votes to assure the election of his friend Giovanni Battista Montini as Pope Paul VI. He participated in the first three sessions of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1964 before his death in early 1965. He was honored by burial in his titular basilica, Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
