Alice Jane Lamb was born in Monroe (Jersey City) New Jersey – she was the daughter of Irish immigrants Patrick Lamb and Catherine “Kate” Stevens who arrived in the US about 1852. Her father died sometime before 1871 – in that year, her mother Catherine is enumerated in the Canada Census as a widow, living in Simcoe, Orillia, Ontario. The family included Catherine now age 50, son Patrick – age 20, son Michael – age 18, Alice – age 15 and daughter Sarah – age 11. On 1 Aug 1877, Alice married John Tolchar Turner in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. The couple lived in Orillia, Simcoe East, Ontario, during the 1891 Canadian Census. John’s occupation is plasterer and they have seven children: Sarah – age 12, Mary – age 9, John – age 8, Thomas – age 7, Alice – age 4, Elizabeth – age 2 and Rose – age 1. The family moved to the United States – exactly when is unsure. The 1900 US Census says they immigrated in 1894, but John was naturalized as a US citizen on 29 Nov 1889 according to an affidavit in his 1922 passport application. In any case, Alice and John lived in Niagara Falls, NY and are enumerated there in the 1900 US Census – with an address of 1810 15th St. John is still working as a plasterer and an additional three children: William – age 8, Charles – age 6, and George – age 3, have been added to the household. The family is still on 15th St. in Niagara Falls, NY during the 1910 US Census and son-in-law Walter Wilson is living in the household married to daughter Rose. Alice and John are still in Niagara Falls during the 1915 NY State Census, but have moved to Oneida, Madison, NY by the 1920 US Census and are living on Sand Street. John is age 66 and Alice is 63. Two children, sons Charles and George are now adults but still in the household. John is a janitor at a silverware factory. In 1922 he and Alice applied for US passports and travelled to England, arriving on the ship President Roosevelt in Plymouth on 23 Oct 1922 for a visit to John’s ancestral home. The couple returned to Oneida and were enumerated there in the 1925 NY State Census. John died on 16 Jun 1927 in Oneida and was buried there and Alice returned to Niagara Falls to live with daughter Rose and her husband Walter Wilson. Alice died in Niagara Falls, NY at her daughter’s home. Her remains were returned to Oneida, NY and buried alongside her husband John. (Posted by: JWilson)
