Richard was born to Hamilton Howard Wood and Frances Ann Parker in Chickasaw Co. MS and according to his being born in Jan. 1850 he should have appeared in his parents home. I and other Wood family researchers haven't ever been able to find H.H. Wood and family on any 1850 census but have found them on the 1860 Buena Vista, Chickasaw Co. MS census.
Richard joined the Civil War in Chickasaw Co. MS in Apr. 1864 so he was just barely 14 yrs. old and later record prove he probably lied about his age. I figure he probably joined the Civil War because his father had been killed in the Civil War at The Battle of Antietam in Sept. 1862. Richard survived the Civil War and I imagine his family was very happy that he returned home for I'm sure his family was very worried about him since his father had been killed. I do know Richard's mother Frances sought and was paid the money owed to them from H.H. Wood's service in the War.
I have no idea why but Richard, his mother and siblings moved to Lafayette Co. MS sometime in the late 1860s. His mother died in 1877 and I've never found where she's buried, maybe in this same Tula Cemetery. Richard is in his older half brother, Robert Marshall Wood's, home on the 1880 Pontotoc Co. MS census.
Richard married Mattie Bell Hill in Chickasaw Co. MS on Apr. 12, 1881 and by 1900 they're in Calhoun Co. MS, no idea of that reason either. It may have been that wife Mattie had family living in Calhoun Co. but info. gives she was probably born in Pontotoc Co. MS. Richard and Mattie are still in Calhoun Co. MS in 1910 but they're back in Lafayette Co. MS before 1916. Richard applies for a pension from the Civil War in 1916 but is turned down, he applies again in Aug. 1921 and is approved.
Richard had siblings Martha Ann (Annie) Wood McGehee, Alice H. Wood Harris, Rufus Henry Wood, Ruben Wood, Felix Grundy Wood, John Wesley Wood and Leona Caroline (Carrie) Wood. I believe there was a child born for Richard's parents in later 1861 or early 1862 due to names on a death list but not positive.
Richard and wife Mattie had children Joseph Hamilton Howard Wood, Abbott Lafayette Wood, Jyles Clarence Wood and William Richard Wood. The 1900 and 1910 census both have them with only 4 children born and 4 living so I believe they only had these 4 sons and no daughters.
