Frederick was born to Asahel Carpenter and his wife, Amanda Malvina Thayer, and one of 11 siblings. His parents died when he was about 12 and he and his siblings lived with numerous people during their younger years.

He married Marian Sickler and they had five known children: Gideon Judd, Frank, Anna L., Frederick G. and Charles Cyrus.

Served with 76th PA Infantry [Union] during the Civil War.

[His birth/death dates from the web site, Burials in Nebraska of Civil War Veterans are b. 1/4/1825, d 4/21/1908. That site lists him with 102nd Infantry, Co. D. His military record indicates he was with 76th PA Infantry. His military record lists a pension card and states he died 1909. Not sure where web site got his dates.]
