LONG BEACH -- Frances H. DeVries, 68, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, in Gulfport.

Mrs. DeVries was born in Scranton, Pa., and had been a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 1968 and of Long Beach since 1970. She was a Polish National Catholic. She was retired from Civil Service, having worked at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport for over 24 years and was a veteran of the Navy. Mrs. DeVries was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, serving as President of VFW in 1969-1970 and as District President in 1970-1971. She was a charter member of the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Survivors include her husband, Gerritt DeVries of Long Beach; a daughter, Lt. Comdr. Anita D. DeVries of Washington, D.C.; a son, Jeffery ''Jeff'' P. DeVries of Lyman; three sisters, Stasia Orzech and Helen Ptasinski, both of Scranton, and Victoria Gurga of Waterbury, Conn.; three brothers, Michael Urbanowicz, John Urbanowicz and Henry Urbanowicz, all of Scranton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport. A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel, where friends may call an hour before service time. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with full military honors.
