Known as Spud during his appearances between 1931 and 1932 in the "Our Gang" series of short subject films, he's probably most remembered as the older, spoiled, red-headed, stepbrother of "Wheezer", played by Bobby Hutchins and Dorothy, played by Dorothy Deborba.

In the 1931 Our Gang film, Dogs Is Dogs, "Stymie", played by Mathew Beard almost convinces Sherwood that ham and eggs can talk in a ploy to get him to cook for everyone.
In 1932, Sherwood performed in Hook and Ladder and Readin' and Writin'
