Samuel moved to Orangeville, Pennsylvania from Columbia County, Pennsylvania in 1830 and continued to farm there until 1836. Samuel and his two brothers, John and Peter, heard about the fertile land in Richland County, Ohio and set out with their families in two horse-drawn wagons via Pittsburgh. After 16 days journey, they landed in Mansfield, Ohio.

Leaving his family near Mansfield he went to Indiana and Michigan to check out the areas but decided to wait and, therefore, settled in Cass Township, where he had some acquaintance. With only $90.00 cash, he purchased 80 acres and added from time to time until he had a large well-fenced and improved farm, acquiring a total of 186 acres.

He and his family were members of the United Brethren Church, and for many years he served as one of the officers. In the ante-bellum days, Samuel was strongly opposed to slavery. Samuel was a Whig in his early days but when the Republican Party was formed, he joined its ranks.

Samuel died in Cass Township, Richland, Ohio.
