Agnes was the only child of Jeremiah and Ellen (Boyle) Alton who lived to see Canada. She had two sisters, one died in Ireland and the other sister died on the boat while crossing the ocean in 1847. Her mother also died in Ireland about 1845.
After arriving in Canada she lived with her father Jeremiah. In 1856 Jeremiah married Mary Caesar, seven years later in 1863 Agnes married Isaac Cranston. Agnes had also four half sisters and four half brothers by her father's second marriage.
Agnes and Isaac lived on the Si Lot 12, Con 8, Ashfield Twp on Huron County Road No. 1 containing one hundred acres. Isaac bought this farm from his father James Cranston in 1862 two years after James had taken this land from the crown. Isaac and Agnes had three sons and a daughter. Keith Cranston a grandson of Agnes and Isaac lived on this farm until 1982 when he sold it and moved to Wingnam. Isaac and Agnes also raised Mabel, a niece. Mabel later married Wm. Irvin. Isaac died after a fall from an apple Tree.
