Richard Lee Devers was born in February 1854 to John Perry Devers Sr. and Mary Martha Lee Devers in Bethany, Missouri. He enlisted in the 11th US Infantry Co F as a private in Newport, KY on November 18, 1875 when he was 21 years old and was sent to build forts during the Indian Wars at Fort Custer. Richard was in the second detail that had to rebury the dead after Custer's Last Stand in 1876. He received an honorable discharge in August 1880 at Fort Custer and returned to Bethany Missouri and married Harriet Hoyt around 1888 or 1889.

They had four children, and after Harriet Hoyt's death in 1898, Richard lived with his widowed mother and children in Bethany. He worked at a mill and never remarried. His children were:

Nellie Lee Devers, 1890 - 1975 (In Garden Grove, CA)
Lemuel Devers, 1892 - 1962 (In Grant City, MO)
Ernest Martin Devers, 1894 - 1981 (In Maryville, MO)
Ava Devers, 1898 - died ? (In Omaha, NE)

He died at age 62 at the Leavenworth Home for Soldiers. He is buried at Ft. Leavenworth.
