Lucille Millizen 90th Birthday Open House

Lucille Jones Millizen of Monticello will celebrate her 90th birthday at an open house for friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 18, in the activity room of the Piatt County Nursing Home.
Lucille was born on Nov. 18, 1905 in Monticello, a daughter of Roy H. and Nellie Miner Jones. She graduated from Monticello High School in June of 1923.
After graduating from MHS, Lucille went on to the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1925 and '26. She attended Illinois State University in Normal the summers of 1926 and '27. She then graduated after three years from the School of Nursing in St. Luke's, Chicago in 1931.
She did her post graduate studies at the Kankakee School of Nursing and Chicago in 1931 and 1932. From there she received a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Chicago in 1951. She continued her education in1943, 44, 48, 49, and 51 by attending the University of Chicago in Nursing Education.
Lucille received two scholarships through her college years. One was the Nursing Education Scholarship from the First District, in Illinois. The second was from the Nurses Association in the summer of 1944.
Throughout continuing her education, and following, Lucille held numerous positions. She was Assistant Chief Nurse for the Kankakee State Hospital in 1932 and was promoted to Chief Nurse in 1932 and '33.
She was then the Supervisor of the general hospital at Elgin State Hospital in 1934. She then moved to Assistant Director of Nursing at the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital in1935-'39. She was promoted to Director of Nursing in 1939 and held that position until 1956.
When Lucille retired from her career with the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital, she moved to Fort Myers Beach, Fla. In 1957 she married John Edson Millizen, former Director of Administration of the same Hospital. Together, they continued a life of service as active volunteers in the community and church, Chapel-By-The-Sea.
Lucille was Clerk of the Session for many years of that church, a significant leadership position in the congregation. She volunteered weekly at the Library, and was an active member of a prayer chain that operated around the clock. She formed a group called HIHO, Hope in Helping Others. It was designed to give relief and support to long time caregivers. Family and friends were the recipients of many acts of kindness, hospitality, generosity, and support over the years.
Her husband died in 1969 but she continued to live in Florida until 1989. She then moved back to Monticello to be closer to family members.
She is currently residing at the Piatt County Nursing Home where she is a member of the Resident Advisory Council, a group that meets monthly assisting the staff in more effective operation from the resident's viewpoint.
