~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a child, he worked as a mule skinner, picked cotton, walked to school and grew strong and healthy in the So. Texas of the 1920's/30's. He went to school at Holland school, Bell county, TX.
He served in the WWII military service doing 2 tours of duty overseas. When in Egypt, he spent days off lolling on the river Nile, visited the pyramids and built his first 'bar' there. He was also in the Holy Land and visited all the places famous to Christianity. When he was discharged, he came to Corvallis, OR where his father was living. He liked Oregon so much he never left. He married (1st) Martha Hooe but that marriage did not last long. He moved to Portland and enrolled in Multnomah College. He played semi-pro baseball and showed great promise. He was studying to be an accountant and he was working as a bartender to finance college but found that he was making more money as a bartender than he ever could as an accountant. Plus, he was having more fun.
The first bar he owned in Portland was called "Jeff's Corner" in SW Portland. He lived in an apartment across the street from the bar. As soon as he had accumulated enough money he bought one of the biggest nightclubs in Portland, the "Super 99" across from the Bomber on McLaughlin. His problem with alcohol was starting to surface and by 1957, he lost the bar. He hadn't paid the taxes and spent all the money.
He then went to work for his brother in the construction business but that didn't work out so, he went back to work as a bartender again. He worked for Elmo Jacks as he had done off and on throughout the years. Elmo was starting the biggest nightclub in Portland at the time called "The Longhorn". Chuck also worked in many other bars and restaurants in Portland. He was a bartender extraordinaire!
Dec 24, 1959, he married Doneva Shepard in Vancouver, WA. They had 2 children; Tim Shannon and Tami Shannon. They were the absolute light of his life. The marriage, however ended in divorce but he continued to live close-by so his children could have access to both parents.
Because of his education in accounting, he was an asset to people starting in the bar business. He helped establish many fine restaurants and bars in Portland; The Aladdin room, Rickshaw Charlie's, Riverside West, The Flame, Elmo's Longhorn and others.
After Chuck's mother died in 1969, he bought another bar "the Sandy Hut" with his inheritance.
Chuck spent his last years in a mobile home close to his children. He loved to gamble and fish. And most of all, he loved his kids. He would have really loved his grandkids and great grandkids!
His children; Tim and Tami sprinkled his ashes at his favorite fishing hole, Lost Lake in Eastern Oregon.
Chuck, you are greatly missed. You left a lot of good memories with many people. Rest in peace.
