Robert, who resided at 114 Middleboro Road, Richardson Park, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Utilityman with the Merchant Marines on the S.S. Coamo during World War II.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" when his ship was sunk by German U-boat U-604 off the coast of Ireland.

He was awarded the Mariner's Medal and the Combat Bar with a Star.

His remains were not recovered.

None of the 186 people aboard the Coamo, including those who managed to get into life rafts, survived. This was the largest number of lives lost on any American merchant ship during World War II.

One other Delawarean was also lost on the S.S. Coamo: Fourth Cook John Thomas Karschner.
